The DIA's next large-scale exhibition, "Bitter|Sweet: Coffee, Tea & Chocolate,” on view Nov. 20, 2016–March 5, 2017, will take you back 400 years to the time when coffee, tea and chocolate were first introduced in Europe. These hot drinks profoundly changed drinking habits, tastes and social customs, and spurred an insatiable demand for specialized vessels, such as coffee cups, tea sets and chocolate pots. The 68 works of art in “Bitter|Sweet” are mostly from the museum’s holdings in pre-1850 European silver and ceramics. Visitors will have the chance to engage all five senses!
DIA members can reserve tickets beginning Oct. 20 and tickets for the general public go on sale Nov. 3. Learn more at dia.org.
The exhibition is organized by the Detroit Institute of Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
