Lu Shiyi (style name Kehe, sobriquet Xicun) was a native of Kinmen in Quanzhou and became a Provincial Graduate in 1822. He was recommended to assist in collecting painting, calligraphy, and inscriptions on bronze and stone for the Lin Family of Banciao by Zhou Kai (fl. 1st half of the 19th c.). The books and rubbings he bought formed the foundation of Bronze and Stone School studies in Taiwan, which had an important influence on local calligraphy circles of the late Qing dynasty and Japanese colonial period.
This couplet in running script reads, “Fragrance of tea and scent from a meditation seat; Slender bamboo are by an old plum studio.” The archaic and untrammeled style has a unique harmony. Mr. Lin Cheng-tao donated this couplet to the National Palace Museum in 2002.
